Loneliness has serious health consequences. Hereโ€™s how to keep your loved one engaged and inspired.

Most of the chores that family caregivers do for their loved ones are crystal clear. Sometimes, itโ€™s how much medicine to give and how often, getting to a doctorโ€™s appointment on time, or feeding nourishing meals three times daily. But thereโ€™s one critical chore that sounds easy yet ranks among the most difficult: socialization.

Socialization is particularly critical as we age because it gives us a sense of belonging and purpose, says Linda Abbit, author of The Conscious Caregiver: A Mindful Approach to Caring for Your Loved One Without Losing Yourself. She says socialization helps older adults maintain their language skills and boost their physical and mental well-being.

So many people forget there are many ways to volunteer...even if you are bedridden.ย  There are lots of organizations (veterans, church, schools, etc.) that always need help.ย  Just making a phone call can help an organization with a meeting reminder or other phone tree that will keep someone engaged and provide a socialization contact.ย  As a volunteer, you set your position and hours based on your abilities and schedule. You can be as involved as you are able. Organizations can always use someone to make phone calls or send an email or text message. Possibilities are endless!ย

ย

I have a friend that has been bedridden for several years but is still a part of a National Veterans Organization at the national level. She's always very involved and has even participated in setting up events for National Conventions.

When fall arrives, I plan on trying the Dog Park suggestion = you donot need to have a dog.

ย

Lol, I don't - just a cat & always thought it would be weird going. Summer is TOO HOT for me. I did run across a small dog park here in Virginia last year when I was out exploring in my car. Lol, now to find it AGAIN!!!

ย

What are YOU doing to get more socializing into YOUR life & who you are taking care of?

ย

Take care,
